balms, moisturisers and lotions

To make things a bit clearer, balms, moisturisers and lotions all have one common goal, to hydrate, treat and repair your dry skin. Some may have anti-aging effects, others may include skin regenerating ingredients, but in general they work to protect your skin making it more supple and smooth.

In general, the difference between a balm, moisturiser and lotion is its consistency and thickness.

A balm is normally free from water content and formulated with oil or beeswax as its base. It is suitable for extremely dry areas such as the hands, joint areas or the heels, Normally balms are not designed for facial use because they are much denser and intensive, and can cause breakouts in the skin.

A Moisturiser or cream is lighter in consistency and contains a mixture of water and oil in its base. Most moisturisers and creams are formulated for the face with additional anti-aging and treatment ingredients added to achieve a desired skin outcome. There are so many variations of moisturisers to choose from. Ones that are lighter in texture is ideal for everyday moisturising. Those with a heavier consistency is suitable for night use

A lotion has the lightest consistency of the three, with high water base and low oil content. Designed mainly for body use, you’ll find there is large selection of body lotions available in the market. You’ll also find alot of day lotions formulated for the face or people suffering with acne due to its lightness.

For those of you that have oily skin, go with a light weight lotion. If you have dry mature skin, choose a moisturiser with a thicker consisitency. Night creams will generally be thicker than a day cream.

  • The main difference between all of these is the formulation.
  • Lotions: Lotions are typically the lightest consistency of these skincare products and include water as one of their main ingredients. They have a low oil content and typically only moisturize for a short period of time. Many lotions use synthetic preservatives or alcohol to prevent microbial growth. This alcohol can dry out the skin -- the exact opposite of the lotion’s purpose. Lotions frequently come in a bottle with a pump.

  • Cream: Creams typically have a lower water content than lotions and therefore a higher oil content. Creams are thicker than lotions and are often packaged in jars, tubs or glass containers. Most creams and moisturizers are formulated for the face to plump the skin and help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles with additional anti-aging and treatment ingredients added to achieve the desired skin outcome. Facial moisturizers that are used every day are typically lighter in texture.
  • Balm:  Balms are typically plant oil and wax-based ointments used to heal or soothe the skin. They are thicker than lotions and creams and don’t contain water. Balms can have a consistency somewhere between a heavy liquid to a solid. Balms provide superior protection and deeply nourish skin because they use plant oils, butters from nuts and fruit, and waxes such as beeswax. While balms may feel greasier than lotion, those oils are doing their job at nourishing your skin.

  • Moisturizing Balms

Balms are solidified oils that melt into liquid when they come into contact with your skin. Unlike creams, balms do not contain water. They absorb best when applied to damp skin, and typically, you need only about half a pea’s worth of balm to moisturize your entire face. Similar to creams, they provide an occlusive, nourishing protective layer to your skin and seal in your skincare for optimal results. Balms are especially beneficial for anyone with dry skin, or those in cold/dry climates. Oils layer beautifully with balms, too, but keep in mind that you typically don’t need a cream and balm in the same routine.
